Irvine Jewish community center, school evacuated after bomb threat

IRVINE – About 1,000 people were evacuated Monday from the Merage Jewish Community Center of Orange County and the adjacent Tarbut V’Torah school following a bomb threat, police said.

A threat was phoned into the center at 1 Federation Way around 4:40 p.m., Irvine Police Department spokeswoman Kim Mohr said. The evacuation was initiated by the center’s staff.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb-sniffing dogs were called in to search the center and school, however, nothing suspicious was located. No one was injured.

It’s unclear whether the incident is related to a wave of bomb threats made Monday to Jewish centers and schools across the nation.

Merage Jewish Community Center officials said in a statement they are working with the Irvine Police Department, FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the threat.
